A little coaching for folks entering the workforce is always a plus, and for people experiencing disabilities, a little extra support goes a long way. That’s why The Opportunity Foundation and Central Oregon Community College are partnering to offer a class called Soft Skills to Get and Keep a Job.

“Our goal is to provide an opportunity for individuals experiencing barriers to employment to learn soft skills that are vital to success in getting and maintaining a job,” said Lydia Hemsley, Supported Employment Manager for The Opportunity Foundation of Central Oregon.

According to Hemsley, the class helps students develop effective workplace communication and customer service skills while learning about safety on the job, personal hygiene and professionalism. They can also create a career portfolio, study for the food handler’s card and participate in mock interviews. Other topics include work ethics, conflict management, social skills, teamwork, problem solving on the job, emergency preparedness and goal setting.

“Our outstanding course instructor, Teresa Healer, consistently comments on the remarkable changes she sees in many of the students who participate in the course. Students comment that they enjoy the course and have learned important skills for being successful on the job,” said Hemsley.

The 10 week course is offered at COCC’s Redmond campus. The registration fee is $395. Spring term is April 4 through June 8th Tuesdays through Thursdays from 10 – 11:30 am. The class accommodates six to 10 students.
